16 Oct 2021
In an interesting development on Sunday, 17th October, a Chennai Super Kings’ official confirmed about retaining their talismanic captain, MS Dhoni, prior to the mega-auction in 2022.
According to ANI, the four-time IPL winning skipper will be the first beneficiary for the Retention card to be used by the franchise next year.
“The first retention card at the auction will be used for MS Dhoni. The CSK ship needs it's captain and MS Dhoni will be back next year as well,” said the CSK official.
Touted to be finished after last year's horrible showing, MS Dhoni made a grand comeback in this season of the IPL, taking his team to its fourth title after competing in nine finals in his tenure as a skipper. His match-winning knock in the first qualifier also put out all doubts that critics had of his ability to still bat and win games with the willow. His captaincy was never in doubt at any point in time.
In the next edition of the IPL, there would be 10 teams and a mega auction would take place with existing franchises allowed benefits to retain some players and buy back some others through the Right to Match Cards. Although there has been no official announcement in regards to the retentions of RTMs, word of the mouth is that those features will stay for the mega auction.
