Sri Lanka rode on some fine piece of batting from Avishka Fernando and captain Dasun Shanaka and then a decent bowling performance to etch a win in the first T20I of the three-match series against Oman in Al Amerat.

Batting first, the visitors had a dismal start to the proceedings and were left tottering at 51/4 when Fernando and Shanaka joined hands and stitched an unbeaten stand of 111 runs for the fifth wicket.

While Fernando remained unbeaten at 83 off 59, Shanaka was not out for 51 off 24. For Oman, Fayyaz Butt picked up a couple of wickets but was hit for 42 runs in 4 overs while Kaleemullah and Khawar Ali scalped a wicket apiece.

In reply, Oman too had a disappointing beginning to the chase as they lost 4 wickets at 23 runs and were later reduced to 87/6. But it was Mohammad Nadeem and wicket-keeper batsman Naseem Khushi who tried to steady the ship. The two batsmen put 46 runs for the seventh wicket where Naseem struck 40 off 22. Nadeem was out for 32 off 32 deliveries.

Oman were eventually restricted to 143/8 in 20 overs and lost the match by 19 runs. For Sri Lanka, it was Lahiru Kumara who was the pick of the bowlers after he returned with 4/30 in 4 overs.

The two sides will now meet on Saturday at the same venue.
